Benjamin Moore's Color of the Year: Wythe Blue!

Paige One

Hiya Papaya
Much more versatile than you may think, blue is truly a classic color. It has universal appeal, never goes out of style, and is overwhelmingly chosen as a color favorite across North America. It evokes the sea and sky, physically calms us, and symbolizes trust and commitment.
Because of the influence that blue has in our world today, we have chosen Wythe Blue (HC-143) as Benjamin Moore's 2012 Color of the Year. It's a beautiful, calming hue that has an element of heritage and offers grounding rootedness, providing comfort and stability.

Lets hear it for Wythe Blue! I've long loved the color (see my other post here) and I know that a lot of you have used it (and love it!) in your own homes, so I was excited to read the news from the paint experts over at Hirshfield's Color Club. They shared the 2012 trend colors in a bunch of great room sets...it's crazy how much paint can change the look of a room! Needless to say, I couldn't agree more with Benjamin Moore's choice for Color of the Year. I am also loving their inspiring Earth & Sky color palette that incorporates the color so beautifully! Who is ready to do some painting?!

Vacation Recap! (Long One!)

I know that was a ton of photos, in one VERY large image...my apologies if it forever to load! If there's one thing I'm good at, it's taking photos on vacation. "Hold on, I need to take a picture!" (right, Chris?) I hope the collage gave you a sampling of our short vacation out to the coast of Massachusetts! I'll try to recap to the best of my memory, so if any of you ever have the absolute pleasure of getting out that way you'll know what not to miss!

Thursday: Flight delays and lost luggage....but we successfully arrived in Providence late at night.

Friday (my birthday): Hit up the Bourne Scallop Festival in Buzzards Bay. Yum! Checked into the SeaCoast Inn in Hyannis, absolutely highly recommended. The owners were super duper nice and incredibly helpful, and our room was cute! Toured beloved Chatham, drooled over the incredible dream houses, then went up to Orleans and did more of the same. We ended up eating one fantastic dinner (complete with candle-topped cupcake) at Chatham Squire Restaurant. Oh and stopped for some fudge and candy at the Chatham Candy Manor. Yum!

Saturday (our anniversary): Drove to Woods Hole and took the ferry to Martha's Vineyard. Rented a car (jeeps were sold out!) so we could see more of the island (more houses!). Ate a fab lunch at Among The Flowers Cafe in Edgartown. Stopped in fun shops and walked the streets, couldn't help but imagine we were a fisherman family back in the day! Drove all around the island...highlights being Gay Head, the adorable Victorian gingerbread cottages in Oak Bluffs, and the stone walls of the picturesque Chilmark countryside (that was our fav). Back to Edgartown where we ate dinner overlooking the harbor at the Seafood Shanty. Walked the quiet streets, at some delicious Mad Martha ice cream, then back to Hyannis all pooped out!

Sunday: Walked to the ferry station and took the high-speed (1 hr) ferry to Nantucket. I couldn't even handle how pretty everything was as we were coming in! Walked the cobblestone streets, visited some cute shops (awesome decor shops there!) and ate a late breakfast at Black-Eyed Susan's. Best pancakes ever! We decided to rent a moped so we could see more of the island (more houses!). It was such a good time. Made our way to Cisco Beach and watched the surfers, then over to our favorite part of the island: Sconset. The cutest little rose-covered shingled cottages I could ever have imagined, super fabulous shingled homes on the bluffs overlooking the ocean, the quaintest, cutest little village....I'm surprised we even managed leave. Made our way back to the town of Nantucket, returned the moped, walked around some more, then ate dinner at The Brotherhood of Thieves. Best chowder we've ever tasted! Super tired and with sore feet (shouldn't have worn my new flats), we then took the last ferry back to Hyannis.

Monday: Finally slept in, then took a leisurely drive to Newport, RI where we took in the impressive Newport Mansions. Insane stuff. Then spent our remaining time by the water taking in the incredible views of the Atlantic, not knowing when we'd see it next!

Phew! If you're still reading along, bless your hearts! :) I've wanted to see this area for as long as I can remember, and it was so much more than I imagined...I'm still so excited about it (if you can't tell.) Anyway, thanks for reading along and again for all your recommendations. We know it wouldn't have been such an amazing trip without all of your great suggestions! And with that, I hope your weekend is full of fun and sunshine where ever you are!

I'm Back!

What a dream the last few days were. Our trip to Mass. was fantastic! We were so surprised how big Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket were. Oh my goodness, the countryside!! That's what surprised us the most. Of course it was cute house overload, everywhere you looked were the most darling shingled-style homes. I told Chris, this is like Pinterest, in real life!

I have a lot to catch up on and have to run to pick up Gertie from the dog-sitter, so I'm just going to leave you with these teaser photos I took on Cape Code in Chatham.

Chatham...talk about THE perfect place to spend my birthday!! *sigh*

Travel Advice?

I hope you all had a great holiday weekend! I stayed put here in Minnesota...for now! In a few weeks though Chris and I will be heading to the coast of Massachusetts for a few days. You don't even know how excited I am. I've been wanting to visit the area for as long as I can remember. We'll actually be celebrating our anniversary (of our first date...we can keep celebrating that even though we're married now, right?) as well as my birthday! We are planning to spend a day taking in Cape Cod (we're staying in Hyannis), then spending a day on Martha's Vineyard and another day on Nantucket. So we'd love to hear any and all suggestions you guys might have on where to dine, tour, shop...you always have the best ideas! Although I'm quite certain if the entire vacation is spent drooling over all the charming homes like this one on the Vineyard photographed by Alaina of Live Creating Yourself, I'll be the happiest tourist of them all! :)

Just Beachy Bunkie

If there's one person who accomplished a heck of a lot this summer (August, where did you go?!), it's Chris of Just Beachy. All summer long she has been working hard building this adorable backyard bunkie. It's been so fun watching the progress unfold on her blog, and I have to say the end results are even more darling than I imagined! I can't even handle those floors...they are so stinkin' perfect. She used cottage pine wood flooring from Home Depot and painted them using high gloss latex floor porch paint in a cheery Jamaican Bay by Behr. And I just adore her hand-painted beach sign made from roof scraps. So cute! You can see more photos and read all about her project right here!

Happy 4th of July!

Just when I didn't think I could love it any more!! Remember the week-long Dream Home Tour we took a couple of weeks ago?? Since those photos were taken, my reader Cristi and her husband Jeff put up shutters painted the same fab color as the door and the garage, Benjamin Moore's Wythe Blue. Doesn't it look amazing?! Another round of applause to the builder Morgan Hatfield of Hatfield Homes and Cristi's photography at Hiya Papaya! If you missed the tour, check out all five days starting here.

I'm delighted to be a guest blogger today at two fantastic blogs! The one-and-only Tobi Fairley asked me to put together an "All-American Design" themed post for her, in turquoise of course! Then visit me over at the creative haven DIY by Design where I'm sharing a few of my favorite readers' rooms. Come and say hello!

To all of my readers in America, Happy 4th of July!! I hope you have a wonderful, safe holiday weekend! See you on Tuesday!

Day One: Dream Home Tour

I'm beyond excited to share this spectacular home with you guys. Believe it or not, this space actually belongs to one of my readers. After years of saving design ideas in a folder, Cristi and her husband Jeff recently completed building their dream home in Lindon, Utah. They knew exactly what kind of home they wanted: light, beachy and airy. The couple has ties to Hawaii and wanted to incorporate that feel into their new home. And two years ago they took a trip out to the Hamptons (they won the trip on Price is Right! ha!) and fell in love with the homes out there. (There should really be a support group for us!) When it came time to finally build their new home, their aim was to fuse the Hawaiian beachy feel with the Hamptons waterfront classic architecture and design. I'm loving the results!

Their dream home took them a year and a half to complete from the design and concept stage to the certificate of occupancy. They selected award-winning Morgan Hatfield of Hatfield Homes to bring their vision to life. Cristi's husband Jeff actually did quite a bit of the architectural design while Cristi worked very closely with another award-winner, talented interior designer Lindy Allen of Four Chairs Furniture. She was able to perfectly implement all of those fabulous ideas Cristi had been saving for so long. (In fact, it's an honor to know a lot of her inspiration actually came from reading House of Turquoise!) Building their new home was a labor of love for them and it truly is "their baby"!

Cristi may not be a designer, but it should come as no surprise that she does indeed have an artistic background. She's not only musical, but is also a photographer by profession. (She and Jessi Safsten took all these amazing images above!) Check out their website here...what talent! Cristi also has a really fun and colorful Etsy shop where she sells cute recycled accessories and her beautiful prints.

Seriously, I'm madly in love with this home and Cristi's photographs that capture it so beautifully. Pretty sure if I was going to build my dream home it would look exactly like this. All week I'm going to be taking you on a tour of their entire home, so come back tomorrow to continue on! I can't wait for you guys to see more of it...I guarantee you'll love it all!

If you have any questions at all about anything you see, please don't hesitate to ask away! Cristi is a real sweetheart and is more than willing to share! :)

Back from Mexico!

I'm baaaack!! Holy cow, what a honeymoon. I'll have you know there came a point, very early on actually, where Chris and I looked at each other and had absolutely no clue as to what day it was. Now that's a vacation! No laptop or iphone, just simply a camera to capture as many memories as possible. I will definitely be sharing some more with you (loads of turquoise in Mexico, it was amazing!), but this awesome house that we spotted while touring Isla Mujueres on a moped was one of my favorites. Imagine having THAT as your home, and the Caribbean in your back yard! *sigh*

As much as I loved two whole weeks of heart-stopping turquoise water, white sandy beaches, fabulous gourmet meals, yummy pina coladas and (most of all) the company of my new husband 24/7, it is indeed good to be home. :)
