Guest Blogger: Alexandra from Destinations Perfected

A massive 6ft. x 8ft. Caroline Riviere watches over the living room

I am a huge fan of House of Turquoise, and could not be more ecstatic that Erin has asked me to write a guest blog for her site! I encourage you to visit my own ‘turquoise-themed’ blog Destinations Perfected on food, travel and the bespoke lifestyle, and I wish Erin all the best on her recent marriage!

Pops of turquoise and coral abound
When I purchased my first condo on Boston’s Waterfront (North End) over three and a half years ago, I did not have one piece of furniture to my name. I moved in with a few suitcases and a bed and then had to begin the task of decorating the roughly 900 square feet from scratch. My mother always says that your home should be a true reflection of yourself. Armed with this advice, I had to identify a style and a color palette that was all my own. Having spent summers in St. Tropez, Sardinia and the New England coastal town of Rockport, Massachusetts, I was most drawn to soothing blue turquoise, pops of red coral, crisp whites and all sorts of sea life associated with the beautiful beaches of my youth, from seashells to octopus to crabs. In addition, I love the elegance, sophistication and glamour of the old Hollywood Regency era; sparkling chandeliers, mirrored furniture, a drink cart with high ball glasses and rich fabrics. Subsequently, my own personal style emerged as a smash up between casual beach chic and the glitz of the 1930s.

In decorating my condo, I used the same rules as those I follow for fashion: invest in a few expensive and timeless pieces and then mix in some cheaper accessories to make a bold splash. The big-ticket key staples in my living room are the high-backed white boucle sofa from Kravet Fabrics and Home Furnishings, Emilio Pucci throw pillows purchased in Sardinia, Italy, a vintage turquoise Hermes Grands Fonds fish scarf I had custom framed, a sea-foam green Persian rug from the personal collection of the former Khan of Kalat (a housewarming gift), a beautiful sea-life painting I had commissioned on a recent trip to Sorrento, Italy (for a close up of my painting, click here), and an absolutely massive reproduction of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ 1806 painting of Caroline Riviere (the original hangs in the Musee de Louvre in Paris) which was printed on fine silk, purchased in Paris, and then framed by hand here in Boston. Luckily my 12ft. ceilings can carry this off!

As for the accessories, lots of velvety turquoise throw pillows from Pier 1 Imports, a glass, mirrored and croc leather trimmed coffee table with silver camel feet from Cabot House Furniture , two custom upholstered white armchairs with ottoman from Bassett Furniture, twin coral lamps (that I painted myself) and various turquoise vases from Home Goods, twin mirrored cinema side tables from Target, Versace Les Tresors de la Mer vases and matching porcelain, as well as sea glass, seashells, and crab shells collected from various vacations.

Mirrored side tables hold treasures from the sea as well as coral lamps I hand painted myself and sprayed with a high gloss lacquer

Shelves above the television hold an Alessi coral bowl, porcelain by Versace Les Tresors de la Mer collection, a handmade seashell picture frame bought in Venice, Italy, birch tree branches I painted red to mimic coral branches, a glass vase full of pearlized shells and a painting I commissioned of a famous square in Padova, Italy

A white boucle couch from Kravet holds Emilio Pucci pillows bought in Porto Cervo in Sardinia, Italy mixed with velvety turquoise throw pillows from Pier 1 Imports

A turquoise and white glass vase rests on the mirrored bottom of a croc leather trimmed coffee table, while a framed vintage Hermes Grands Fonds scarf hangs on the wall

Lovely views from the roof deck of the Boston City Skyline
If anyone wants real proof of where a love or even a hobby of interior design can lead you, I have just been offered and accepted a job to be the new product manager for Liberty of London Furnishing Fabrics in London, and professionally, I come from a footwear background! This is just further testament to the fact that your passions can lead to your destiny. Unfortunately, this means that, as of June, I have to rent out my beautiful condo, but the new tenants have asked me to rent the apartment furnished, and quite honestly, I couldn’t think of a nicer compliment.

Guest Blogger: Annette Tatum

I have always been a big fan of the color turquoise which is why I was so excited to guest blog for Erin of The House of Turquoise. I love that this site is devoted entirely to one of my favorite colors. The variations of what exactly the color turquoise is, is what makes this color so fun. Aqua, sea foam blue, teal..there are endless possibilities. Which is why I find that turquoise is almost as neutral of a color as it is an accent color.

The guest room in my house is off the garden and pool so several years ago I decided that a complimentary theme for the indoor/ outdoor feeling would be a room with turquoise accents.

Inspiration from textiles and embroideries helped me choose the decor palette.

I wanted the room to feel restful but also evoke the idea of vacation. I had some old vintage wallpaper that I hung inside the panel molding and then realized that I must like this look.. I had this vintage lace dress that reminded me once again how close fashion and home decor are. The color of both the paper and the dress were perfect.

I then added more to the turquoise theme with an old vanity.. love this color blue as a stronger accent in the room.

The bedding and textiles are from a collection I designed and fit perfectly into the overall look. Everyone who stays here always wants to stay longer. There is something about the color and its smooth relationship to the outside elements that makes the room dreamy and comforting.

More of Annette Tatum's inspirations can be found on her design blog, and in her book, The Well-Dressed Home. Browse Annette's Home Decor Collections at AnnetteTatum.com. This week only, use code "turquoise" at check-out for 10% off your orders (until Friday 5/6).

Guest Blogger: Luciane from HomeBunch.com

Hi, there! I'm Luciane from HomeBunch.com and I'm posting here today at House of Turquoise. Let me tell you a little about me. I've loved interiors and architecture for as long I can remember and I've been a reader of this blog for a long time, long before I even thought about writing a blog myself. So it's quite the honor to be invited here today to write a post on one of my favorite blogs. Yes, it's very exciting! It's great to meet you all and before I even start I want to thank Erin for letting me write here today.

Erin has such an eye for "pretty", don't you agree? She knows how to choose images which truly inspire and make us dream. When she invited me to make a post I thought about creating something fun for all of us. So I decided to create a top 10 list of my favorite turquoise kitchens that Erin has posted here. I spent a good amount of time trying to select them because there were so many gorgeous kitchens and it was hard to dwindle them down to just 10.

I really hope you enjoy my "picks".

#10: Susan Gilmore

Classic beauty!

#9: Key West Kitchen

It's true, we all love huge kitchens, but not all of us have one. I like this one because even though it's a tiny kitchen, you can admire it for its beauty and practicality. It's great to see when people use the space they have in a smart and fun way.

#8: Diamond Baratta

This is not for everyone. You can't be afraid of color if you choose to have a kitchen like this. Let me ask you this: can you picture a sad person cooking in this kitchen? I simply can't!

#7: Tobi Fairley Does It Again!

Tobi is another person that's not afraid of color. I love her designs and this kitchen is a great example of one.

# 6: Perfect Weekend Retreat

This kitchen is very clever! Did you notice the curtains? Don't feel like doing the dishes? Just hide the mess behind the curtains. Great when you have guests over!

#5 Jeffrey Fisher Home

Who wouldn't love to have a kitchen as pretty as this one?

#4: Swedish Kitchen

In so many cases... simplicity is still the best!

#3: Garrison Hullinger

The more I see this kitchen the more I fall in love with the details. Impeccable!

#2: Bring Home the Beach

Yes, the color is amazing but do you know what I like the best? The fact I can see a family truly enjoying this kitchen, and for me that's what kitchens are all about, being able to share moments with your family in one beautiful space.

#1: Brooks & Falotico

This kitchen is number one because it's so timeless. I love the classic material used here and I especially love the architectural details. This is a curvy kitchen and curves are always beautiful, aren't they?

Oh, I can't tell you how happy I am for spending this time here with you all. Thank you so much, Erin. This was so fun! I hope you're having a wonderful honeymoon and enjoying some sunshine for all of us. Can't wait to see your pictures when you're back. Enjoy every minute of it and we're already missing you!

Thank you again, everyone. It's a real pleasure meeting each and every one of you.

Guest Blogger: Ann & Hooper of Birds of a Feather

... to newlyweds Erin and Chris who are on their honeymoon sunning it up in Mexico, where the sand is white and the water is turquoise (shocker). Congrats you two and thanks for inviting us to guest blog. For those of you who do not know us we are Ann and Hooper from Birds of a Feather. We are inspired by Erin's daily dose of turquoise and thrilled to share a little bit of our own. We finished this dining room in January, complete with Erin's favorite hue.

The room is a little bit Ann and a little bit Hooper and in a constant quest to blend our styles, we styled this table for a portfolio photo shoot. Maybe we got a bit carried away since no one is actually coming to dinner. The client was thrilled and might just have to throw an impromptu dinner party...

The hand painted peacock mural adds a little whimsy to a sophisticated space

and plays off the zig zag drapes across the room. (For more whimsical spaces see here, here, and here). However you use your space no room is complete without the details...

details that make big statements...

ambiance...

and if you are entertaining, down to the place cards. It's the tiniest details that make the biggest impact. (For more tiny details, see here).

Erin, we hope you are enjoying your honeymoon as much as we are enjoying our imaginary dinner party! Stop by on your way home... the table is set!

Bye, bye Birdie,

Guest Blogger: Olivia from Lacquered Life

Hello House of Turquoise readers, thanks for stopping by my Philadelphia apartment! I write a blog called Lacquered Life, where I share my musings on interior design, architecture and historic preservation. My studio is about 12 x14, save the window wells at the dormers. Although a tiny space, I like to think of it as my little treasure chest, where I can cram in all of the little things that I love.

Thanks so much for looking at these pictures of my teeny tiny turquoise apartment, and I hope that you all will stop by and see me at Lacquered Life!
